Alibaba's GMV ranking will be the first in the world in 2020, about twice that of Amazon

May 6, 2019 - The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) recently released a new report, citing the impact of the epidemic, e-commerce online retail sales increased from 16 percent of total retail sales in 2019 to 19 percent.Among them, China's e-commerce sales accounted for 24.9%, and Alibaba's GMV ranked first in the world.

According to the GMV ranking, 11 of the top 13 e-commerce companies are from China and the United States, with Alibaba in the first place, JD.com in third, Pinduoduo in fourth and Meituan in seventh.

GMV, the top 13 business-to-consumer companies, will reach $2.9 trillion in 2020, while Alibaba, with $1,145 billion in sales, is nearly double that of No. 2 Amazon, with $575 billion.

According to the report, there have been mixed results for global B2C e-commerce companies due to the epidemic, but the gross merchandise value (GMV) of the top 13 B2C e-commerce companies increased by 20.5 percent in 2020, up from 17.9 percent in 2019.

Based on data from the national statistical offices of major economies, UNCTAD estimates that online sales will account for 19 percent of total retail sales in 2020, up 3 percentage points from 16 percent in 2019.The share of ecommerce sales in total retail sales in South Korea rose to 25.9 per cent *** from 20.8 per cent in 2019, with China accounting for 24.9 per cent, the UK 23.3 per cent and the US 14 per cent.

Recently, Alibaba Group released its financial report for the third quarter of fiscal year 2021, which showed that the company achieved operating revenue of 221.084 billion yuan in the third quarter, a year-on-year increase of 37%;Operating *** increased 24% year-on-year to 49.02 billion yuan.In terms of subscribers, China's retail market saw annual active consumers increase by 22m to 779m.The number of mobile monthly active users in China's retail market increased by 21 million to 902 million in December 2020 compared to September of the same year.
